1.0 Introduction
Green Way are ISO14001 certified, with a key focus on reusing deconstruction materials, followed by waste minimization throughout a project’s lifecycle.
Green Way adopt the “Waste Hierarchy” principals to reuse and recover as many deconstruction materials as practically possible, viewing landfill is the absolute last option.
The Green Way Hierarchy of Waste Principles

4.0 Energy Recovery
- 9.47 tonnes of woodchip/timber were recovered from the Green Gorilla Sort Line.
- Woodchip is sent to Golden Bay Cement, Whangarei for fuel to heat a cement drying kiln.
- Based on the biomass calorific value of Pinus Radiata used as Hog Fuel, the woodchip produced a total of 88 GJ of energy, equating to 24,413 KwH.1
- 24,413 KwH is enough electricity to power 3 residential households for one year. Based on the annual average consumption of 7,033 KwH per household (2023)2
5.0 Reuse of Materials
Cardboard, paper and steel: Sent to various processing facilities to be recycled back into products.
Concrete: Granulated to produce various “gap” products, used for commercial and domestic fill, temporary roading etc
Clean soil and other “fines”: Converted into engineered hardfill and used in the backfilling quarries, coal mines, landfills etc.
Untreated timber: Timber not used for energy recovery is processed into woodchips and used for animal bedding and landscape mulch.
6.0 Landfill
There are currently no viable recovery methods in New Zealand for insulation materials, polystyrene, and fibre cement. Other nonrecoverable materials sent to landfill include flooring, furnishings, and general rubbish.
7.0 Hazardous Materials
Any hazardous materials encountered, e.g. asbestos contaminated building products and soils ACM), are removed in accordance with regulations and transported to licensed landfills.
8.0 Proposed Improvements for Resource Recovery
Green Way’s sustainability vision is to constantly engage with interested parties to increase the quantities of salvageable materials for reuse and recycling. Options include working with Community Recycling Centres (CRC’s) and the local community to reuse as many demolition materials as possible.
