Now it's our time to Pātai (to ask, question, enquire, cross-examine, provoke, or challenge). On behalf of the community, we're trying to understand why the aspiration for a small community garden on-site at Ponsonby Park, the new civic space at 254 Ponsonby Road, has been denied/delegated for 2 years by the Waitematā Local Board?Local residents are supportive of this outcome. The well-established Sanctuary Mahi Whenua Sanctuary Community Organic Garden has agreed to ‘umbrella’ the project and the inimitable Boopsie Maran from Places for Good is coordinating the initiative. Students from three local schools have expressed an interest in establishing and looking after a community garden on the site and have actively engaged in this project. What's NOT to love about young people wanting to grow nutrient-dense food locally? Yet the permission, sought via a deputation to the Waitematā Local Board at their 20 February business meeting, has not been given.
